Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Today, i was fortunate to get two awesome albums: this one and ADTR’s whatseparates me from you (which either i or matt will review later)
If you Liked this album, i recomend songs by Jimmy Eat World, U2, Temper Trap, Flyleaf, and Thrice. Or just listen to this CD, cuz you’ll get the best of all
This album is produced by Brendan O’Brien, who has a massive resume of classics under his belt (Mastodon’s Crack The Skye is on of my favorite albums that he put his hands on). So it’s not suprising that he took this ok band into the studio and gave them an album that surpasses all ends of the spectrum. I mean this is one of the most diverse albums i’ve heard in my life. Seriously. The album starts off with the hard rocking track We Owe This To Ourselves, a track that could get in cahoots with both mainstreamers and indie kids. It then moves on to the Jimmy Eat World/Temper Trap hybrid song “Impossible”, a song i was very fond of that is getting a fair share of radio play. The song Take Me (as you found me) gives U2 a heads up, while Closer could easily have been on Thrice’s Alchemy Index Vol 1-2. You Belong Here sounds like a David Crowder song that is either written to a lover or a savior, and Pray Tell sounds like a song that could not only chart alt rock but also in Contemporary Christian. The sad break up song Art of War sounds hopeful, but also is kind of sadening (another song that sounds amazingly hybrid). To The Wolves sounds kind of like New Years Day meets Bleed American (if that’s at all possible). The Disarm esque Down is a plea to a lover to take up arms and bring him back up. The most suprizing thing here is the ending, which is the dark track Depraved. The lyrical content is kind of hard to descypher, but it’s pretty much a U2 song gone metal. Very powerful ending to an amazing album. The sounds are so diverse and mind catching, it’s hard to stop listening once you begin. This album will be the big sleeper of the year, and it’s a damn shame. The album is too good to pass up
Final Synopsis:
9.5/10: a beautiful CD, not perfection, but oh so close to it.
